STEMweek: an Afternoon of Science and Wonder
STEMweek: an Afternoon of Science and Wonder
The University of Sannio celebrates the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, established by the UN in 2015 and promoted by UNESCO and UN Women, with an event dedicated to promoting full and equal access to science for women and girls.
On Tuesday, 11 February 2026, at 3:30 PM, the Unisannio Canteen will host an afternoon of discussion with the female students of the Carmen Castiello Study Centre: an informal moment of dialogue, science and creativity to encourage women’s participation in STEM disciplines, among ideas, experiences and a shared cup of tea.
The meeting aims to highlight the role of role models and mentoring through the testimonies of scientists and experts, who will share their educational and professional journeys, helping to overcome cultural stereotypes that still associate scientific disciplines with exclusively male models. The discussion will also focus on curiosity as the driving force of research, showing how “why” represents the starting point of the scientific method, and on the value of STEM skills in addressing contemporary challenges, from environmental sustainability to technological innovation.
During the afternoon, it will be reiterated that science is also creativity, because rigour and method coexist with imagination and passion; that believing in one’s abilities is the first step toward building fulfilling professional paths; and that mutual support among female students, researchers and academics is essential for scientific progress.
The event aims not only to acknowledge women’s contribution to research, but also to strengthen a scientific culture based on talent, competence and equal opportunities.
