Prof. Gerardo Canfora elected President of GII

The Italian Group of Computer Engineering, which coordinates and promotes scientific and educational activities in the field at the national level.

Prof. Gerardo Canfora of the Department of Engineering at the University of Sannio was unanimously elected President of the GII (Gruppo Italiano di Ingegneria Informatica – Italian Group of Computer Engineering) during the Assembly held on 17 December at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. At the same Assembly, Prof. Elisabetta Di Nitto of the Politecnico di Milano and Prof. Giuseppe Liotta of the University of Perugia were elected Vice Presidents of the GII.

The GII was established with the aim of organizing, coordinating, and promoting, at the national level, the scientific and educational activities of faculty members and researchers in Computer Engineering. It comprises more than 1,200 university faculty members and researchers affiliated with the Scientific Disciplinary Sector Information Processing Systems (IINF-05/A), as well as those affiliated with the disciplinary sector Computer Science (INF-01/A) who belong to Engineering Departments and who explicitly request membership by accepting the statute.

In his presentation speech, Prof. Canfora emphasized the need to “make the strategic role of the computer engineer in contemporary society increasingly clear,” ranging from the design and management of fundamental infrastructures to the enablement of industrial innovation; from supporting the digital transformation of Public Administration to ensuring the security of critical infrastructures; and extending to the transformation of healthcare, financial, and logistics services. He also highlighted the importance of “investing in high-quality research” and of contributing to the definition of educational pathways consistent with the new European higher education framework, capable of avoiding distortions and disorientation among students, particularly in light of the continuous technological developments to which computer engineering actively contributes.

The UNISANNIO community wishes Prof. Canfora every success in coordinating one of the largest scientific groupings within the field of Engineering.
