Prison and Fragility. History, Law, Experiences
Prison and Fragility. History, Law, Experiences
On Tuesday, July 15 and Wednesday, July 16, the Department of DEMM at the University of Sannio will host the workshop “Prison and Fragility. History, Law, Experiences” at the Palazzo De Simone venue. The event is organized as part of a Nationally Relevant Research Project (PRIN 2022) funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (Miur) on the topic of prison history and law, and is led by Professor Giuseppina De Giudici from the Department of Law at the University of Cagliari.
The workshop focuses on the issue of physical and mental healthcare for prisoners, a topic studied by the local research unit at the University of Sannio coordinated by Professor Cristina Ciancio, and is structured into two sessions:
The first session, beginning on Tuesday afternoon, July 15 at 3:30 PM, will discuss the conditions of women and minors in prison facilities.
The second session, on Wednesday morning, July 16 starting at 9:30 AM, will address healthcare assistance provided to inmates.
Each session will include three short presentations, primarily from a historical perspective, followed by a highly interdisciplinary roundtable discussion, offering commentary on the issues presented and scheduled contributions not only from historians and legal historians, but also from criminal lawyers, proceduralists, philosophers, sociologists, criminologists, psychologists, educators, constitutional and comparative law scholars, bio-law experts, as well as legal professionals and institutional representatives, such as lawyers, prison directors, and the Ombudsman for Prisoners of the Campania Region.
Starting from a critical reading of selected historical experiences between the 19th and 20th centuries, and using archival documents recently deposited by the Department of Prison Administration (DAP), the research unit at the University of Sannio aims to foster a constructive dialogue between continuity and change, engaging various disciplines involved in studying and addressing the urgent challenges posed by the serious deficiencies of the Italian prison system and the near-systematic denial of the right to healthcare that should be guaranteed within it.
