The Department of Science and Technology (DST) is the University of Sannio’s sole research department in the fields of Life and Earth Sciences, and it is active in Biological Sciences, Biotechnologies, and Geological Sciences. The DST maintains scientific collaborations with several Italian and international universities and numerous national and international research institutions, and it actively participates in the Erasmus programme.
HISTORY
The DST was established in 2013 as a result of Law 240/2010. With the implementation of the new Statute of the University of Sannio, the DST became operational following the closure of the former Faculty of Science (MM.FF.NN.) and the Departments of Biological and Environmental Sciences and Geological and Environmental Studies.
The DST integrates scientific research, teaching and training, and third mission activities (services and scientific collaborations), organised across two main macro-areas: formal and experimental sciences and technologies, and life sciences.
MISSION
Through its research activities, the Department aims to contribute to the education of individuals capable of scientific thinking. This is achieved through the work of its researchers, who are committed to promoting the cultural growth of society.
The DST’s mission is to share knowledge through high-quality teaching and to provide research services to the region, disseminating expertise across various disciplinary fields. It addresses both basic scientific questions and more applied topics in the areas of Biology, Geology, Biotechnology, and the Environment.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Thanks to the quality and diversity of its faculty and researchers, the DST offers a broad and well-qualified educational program, primarily in the biological, biotechnological, and geological fields.
In its areas of expertise, the DST organizes and manages training programs (Professional Bachelor’s Degrees, Bachelor’s Degrees, Master’s Degrees, PhDs, Master’s Programs), including inter-university and Double Degree study programs.
You can find detailed information about the active degree programs in the Teaching section.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
The goal and cultural foundation of all research activity at the DST is the scientific study of specific topics, ranging from basic disciplines to those directly related to Biology, Geology, and the Environment, with a wide range of applications relevant to professions, society, and the territory.
These activities are carried out under national research programs and are supported by ministries and industry partners.
Detailed information on research lines and facilities is available in the Research section.
DOCTORAL PROGRAMS
The DST considers doctoral studies to be a strategic priority and a defining element of its research training activities.
It therefore promotes and supports PhD programs in its areas of expertise.
You can find more information in the PhD section.
THIRD MISSION OBJECTIVES
The DST engages in numerous outreach activities, including the dissemination of research results, certified lifelong learning, and the transfer of knowledge as a factor of socio-economic development.
It also offers services and develops a wide range of applications for institutions, the local area, and industry. The DST has signed many agreements with cultural and research institutions, both nationally and internationally, to carry out advanced training and research activities in partnership.
More details are available in the Third Mission section.
