Alongside the two fundamental objectives of education and research, the Department pursues a third mission, namely to promote the direct application, enhancement, and use of knowledge to contribute to the social, cultural, and economic development of society.
The Department of Science and Technology operates in the following ways:
- Scientific dissemination. The main goal is to share the research carried out by the Department's researchers with the interested public and to disseminate major cutting-edge scientific topics through seminars, conferences, articles in journals and newspapers, websites, and other science communication initiatives;
- Initiatives with schools. This action aims to spread scientific issues within schools, tailored according to the students’ age. Another objective is to guide senior secondary school students toward university studies in biology and geology;
- Technology transfer. The goal here is to transfer skills, technologies, and services developed within the Department to the business world to develop new products, processes, applications, materials, or services with a high degree of innovation.
SCIENTIFIC DEGREE PLAN (PLS). The PLS is an initiative designed to stimulate young people's interest in studying scientific subjects, provide adequate preparation in basic scientific subjects, and strengthen the interaction between the University and schools. Since 2015-2016, the DST has been involved in the PLS Biology/Biotechnology and PLS Geology programs. DST opens its facilities to school groups for laboratory activities, research seminars, and participation in seminars held by Italian and foreign professors. Moreover, the PLS aims to provide training and curriculum updates for high school teachers, especially focusing on experimenting with innovative teaching methods centered on laboratory activities.
SCHOOL-WORK ALTERNATION (ASL). The DST actively hosts high school students as part of ASL projects to familiarize them with the university work environment, teacher-student interactions, and study and career opportunities, through pathways and content that help students make informed choices about their future.
UNIVERSITY ORIENTATION DAYS. Every year, the DST participates in events such as Orientasud, the Student Fair, and Educational Tour. It hosts seminars, promotes its activities in schools, opens research and teaching laboratories to the public, and presents its research and teaching activities. These orientation days target final-year high school students to present degree courses, study paths, job opportunities, and the skills students need to pursue specific degree programs. This event, involving the entire University of Sannio, typically takes place in March.
UniStem Day. Since 2019, the DST has participated in UniStem Day, promoted by the Stem Cell Research Center of the University of Milan - Prof. Elena Cattaneo. The event aims to promote scientific culture among high school students through a renewed approach to dissemination — encouraging “scientific fun” — by engaging 4th and 5th-year students, sparking curiosity and encouraging them to ask new questions. The next event will take place on March 15, 2019, simultaneously in nearly 80 universities across 9 European countries.
RESEARCH OPEN DAY. The DST organizes a series of afternoon meetings open to all students enrolled in bachelor’s and master’s degree courses to illustrate the scientific research activities conducted at the departmental level, aiming to guide students in their study and thesis choices.
RESEARCH AND CONSULTANCY ACTIVITIES FOR THIRD PARTIES. The DST is also involved in third-party projects with various external entities. In the last three years (2015-2017), 44 agreements were active between DST and external entities, which include national and international universities, national research institutions (including various CNR institutes), international consortia, hospitals and other health entities, schools, public bodies including technical government and territorial control agencies, cooperatives, private companies, and public-private partnerships.
