The Master';s Degree Programme in Energy Engineering is founded on a broad and well-balanced educational framework encompassing the three main disciplinary areas of the field: chemical, electrical, and thermo-mechanical engineering. The programme aims to educate highly qualified engineers capable of working as independent professionals or within public and private organizations. Graduates acquire a comprehensive background in energy engineering, enabling them to operate effectively in organizations of different sizes and sectors, characterized by continuous technological innovation and evolving organizational structures.
The educational activities related to the fundamental disciplines are designed to strengthen and expand students' methodological and operational knowledge in mathematics and the basic sciences, providing the level of expertise required to address modelling and experimental analysis of the complex physical and chemical phenomena involved in energy conversion processes.
The core and complementary engineering courses provide students with the methodological and operational knowledge required in Energy Engineering while allowing them to develop an in-depth understanding of specific topics, with particular attention to emerging technologies and state-of-the-art analytical tools.
Upon completion of the programme, graduates will possess an advanced knowledge of the theoretical and scientific foundations of mathematics, the basic sciences, and engineering, with particular emphasis on Energy Engineering. They will be able to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems, including those requiring innovative and interdisciplinary approaches. Furthermore, graduates will be capable of conceiving, planning, designing, and managing complex and innovative systems, processes, and services by applying appropriate and up-to-date methods, techniques, and engineering tools, while taking into account issues related to safety, environmental protection, sustainable territorial development, business culture, and professional ethics.
From a professional perspective, the programme is primarily oriented towards developing advanced competencies in the design, analysis, and control of civil and industrial energy systems. The degree also provides an appropriate academic background for pursuing higher-level studies, including doctoral (Ph.D.) programmes.
Graduates are expected to demonstrate proficiency in at least one official language of the European Union in addition to Italian, as well as adequate information technology skills that enable them to effectively use current digital tools and to keep pace with the continuous evolution of information technologies.
The programme normally consists of 60 ECTS credits per academic year, for a total of 120 ECTS credits. The annual study plan specifies the detailed organization of the educational activities, which include lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions, design projects, seminars, tutoring, academic guidance, and internships. Teaching activities make extensive use of laboratory experiences across the various engineering disciplines. Students are frequently required to develop technical projects based on the knowledge and skills acquired, prepare technical reports, and collaborate in team-based activities.
Examinations are generally conducted individually.. The final examination consists of the preparation and public defence of an individual
Master thesis before an officially appointed examination committee. Under the supervision of a faculty advisor, students are required to develop an original topic that reflects the cultural and/or professional profile of their chosen field of specialization. Thesis preparation may involve research activities, engineering design, and laboratory work.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate a thorough command of the subject, the ability to work independently, effective and concise communication skills in presenting their results, and the capability to critically discuss and defend their work.
