AR carries out research activities concerning the development of photonic components and systems (mainly based on fiber-optic technology) for applications to sensing, with a focus on applications in the diagnostic and biomedical fields. Over the years, he has worked on the following research topics:
- Development of slow light ("slow light") optical devices based on 'tilted' fiber optic gratings for the creation of delay lines.
- Numerical study on the excitation of guided resonances in photonic crystals and quasicrystals.
- Study of the sensitivity of Wood's anomalies in diffractive gratings in dielectric materials.
- Development of fiber-optic devices based on Lab-on-Fiber technology for applications to sensing in chemical and biological fields.
- Development of optical filters obtained by integration on the tip of an optical fiber of metal nanostructures supported by flexible polymer films.
- Development of metallic back reflectors and dielectrics to increase efficiency in thin-film solar cells.
- Design of optical systems and components to guide the insertion of medical needles and catheters.
- Integration of responsive polymers (microgels) on plasmonic structures directly fabricated on optical fiber.
- Integration of compact optoelectronic chips on optical fiber: the "optoelectronics on fiber" technology.
